Roger Ailes’ Secret Nixon-Era Blueprint for Fox News

“Republican media strategist Roger Ailes launched Fox News Channel in 1996, ostensibly as a “fair and balanced” counterpoint to what he regarded as the liberal establishment media. But according to a remarkable document buried deep within the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, the intellectual forerunner for Fox News was a nakedly partisan 1970 plot by Ailes and other Nixon aides to circumvent the “prejudices of network news” and deliver “pro-administration” stories to heartland television viewers.”

Spoiler Alerts: A Manifesto

“America loves having its movies and television shows recapped, reviewed, and regurgitated back to them, but the one thing that it hates more and more is having the events of those things spoiled by reviewers. It’s time for a guide on what constitutes a spoiler and what does not.”

Grandma Assaults Grandson With Garden Hose For Eating Too Much Bacon

“Now before you get too upset, the 64-year-old grandmother in question used the garden hose to spray her 9-year-old grandson in the face, and not, well, wherever your mind just went with that headline. But she did it at full blast! And also beat his legs. And all he did was eat a generous portion of delicious, crispy bacon.”

Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga Among Week’s Biggest Social Media Stars

“The “Monte Carlo” star and “Born This Way” singer are among those seeing big gains in Twitter followers and online video views. The Social 50 ranks the most active artists on the world’s leading social networking sites — YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and iLike — using a formula blending weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with weekly artist page views and weekly song plays.

Spike Lee: Why I Haven’t Made a Feature Film in Three Years

“Lee has lately focused on documentary work with two films about post-Katrina New Orleans for HBO. But he had designs on biopics about Jackie Robinson – the Brooklyn Dodgers slugger who broke baseball’s color line – and soul icon James Brown. And he was in discussions a while back for a sequel to thriller Inside Man, which starred Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster. But he’s been unable to secure financing.”

20 Best Taglines From Movies Over the Last 30 Years

“THR’s sister publication AdWeek combed through the last 30 years of movie marketing and selected some favorite film taglines from that period. The cut-off of 1980 means that perhaps the greatest movie tagline ever — “In space, no one can hear you scream,” from Alien, 1979 was left off. But there’s plenty here to chew on.”

Daniel Radcliffe on Last Day of Potter Filming: “I Wept Like a Child”

“It’s an unlikely pairing, but hey, Oprah’s moved on to bigger things. Good ol’ retired Larry dug deep in his closet and pulled out those trusty suspenders on one more time for a chat with Daniel Radcliffe about the franchise and how the star feels about it ending with the upcoming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.”

Twitter Fight: Ashton Kutcher vs. Village Voice

“Let the loud typing begin! A Twitter war has broken out between Ashton Kutcher and weekly newspaper Village Voice. The two went at it after the Voice published an article on Wednesday that questioned the child-prostitution statistics the actor offered in his “Real Men Don’t Buy Girls” anti-sex-trafficking campaign. And it all went downhill from there…”

Sorry, Rob & Kristen! Not Everyone Is Excited to See Your Breaking Dawn Sex Scene

“It’s no secret that Twi-hards everywhere are anxiously awaiting the much talked-about Breaking Dawn sex scene. However, there’s at least one person out there who is not excited about Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart onscreen steaminess.”

Why the Supreme Court’s Ruling on Games Matters - Sessler’s Soapbox

“Yesterday, Adam was very happy about the Supreme Court’s ruling over the California Violent Video Games law and gave you all an early Soapbox. Now after he’s had some time to digest the ruling, The Sess has decided to give you another, much longer Soapbox going in depth about the details of the case. Find out why this particular Supreme Court case matters to you, whether you’re a gamer or not, in this extended edition of Sessler’s Soapbox.”

The Beatles — Marketed By Today’s Music Industry

“This is both brilliant and sad. Not to say that The Beatles weren’t first presented to the world with a marketing facade when they first hit the scene, but it was, in the very least, a unique marketing facade. Would The Beatles be just another generic emo boy group, lumped-in with all the rest? I guess it’s kind of a moot hypothetical, since their influence remains so critical, but it does make you wonder.”

300 Prequel Gets New Title, Narrows Down Directors

“The long-discussed 300 prequel, which was to be titled Xerxes, is not only still alive, but it’s got a new title and its potential directors narrowed-down. While the film’s purpose of telling the origin story of 300’s (historically-based, albeit loosely) Persian overlord, Xerxes remains, the title of the film will now be called 300: Battle of Artemisia. Additionally, it seems that the list of potential directors have been narrowed-down to two. Noam Murro and Jaume Collet-Serra. What can we expect from this bizarre prequel that, for a time, appeared to be dead in the water.”

World Of Warcraft Now Free To Play Up To Level 20 — Just Enough Time To Get You Hooked

“Along with the release of its second major content patch, Rage of the Firelands, for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Blizzard has also announced that the massively multiplayer role playing game is now free to play up to level 20. They’ve renamed the trial the World of Warcraft Starter Edition and removed the previous 10 and 14 day time trial restrictions. Now there’s a chance for everyone to get hooked, as playing up to 20 levels of the game gives you just enough time to start caring about your character. They’ll even let you make Blood Elf and Draenei characters, races that were previously only available with The Burning Crusade expansion. All you have to do to start your trial is create a account and download the game.”

Ubisoft Seeking Testers For Mystery First-Person Shooter

Ubisoft is seeking game testers for a mysterious, unspecified first-person shooter. Usually QA testers are employed for several months but this “study” is only for two days, July 4th and 5th. The test is in Canada so participants won’t have to worry about missing fireworks while they play. The company didn’t mention the name, but Ubisoft’s upcoming first-person shooters include Far Cry 3 and maybe another unannounced Rainbow Six. Of course there’s the possibility the study will be for an entirely new game… Excited?

HOW TO: Manage Your Online Reputation Using SEO

“Of the almost 80% of U.S. hiring managers who had searched for candidates online, 70% of them said they had rejected a candidate based on what they found in his or her search results, according to a 2009 study commissioned by Microsoft. While you might not be able to remove damaging content from the Internet, there’s a good chance that you can minimize its impact using simple SEO techniques. And even if your search results are squeaky clean, the same techniques can help you control how you’re perceived online. Here’s how to get started.”

Startups Don’t Die, They Commit Suicide

“Long before startups get to the point of delinquent electricity bills or serious payroll cuts, they implode. The people in them give up and move on to do other things, or they realize that startups are hard and can cause a massive amount of mental and physical exhaustion — or the founders get jobs at other companies, go back to school, or simply move out of the valley and disappear.”

RunKeeper Adds New Integration To Its Health Graph In Hopes Of Building ‘The Facebook Of Fitness’

You may have heard about the social graph and the interest graph, but what about the health graph? Thanks to RunKeeper, this term may soon become an oft-used part of your vocabulary. RunKeeper, for those unfamiliar, was founded three years ago as a simple iPhone app and a small online fitness community designed to help runners and other fitness enthusiasts employ smartphone technology to better track, measure, and improve their fitness. Since then, RunKeeper has expanded across mobile platforms, growing into a community of 6 million strong.

LivingSocial Expands Daily Deals Empire; Buys Ensogo, GoNabit And DealKeren

Looks like LivingSocial is employing the same strategy for international expansion as its rival Groupon: by acquiring local daily deal sites to serve as a foundation for discount distribution on a global scale. According to DailySocial, the company has moved to purchase DealKeren (operational in Indonesia), its parent company Ensogo (which offers daily deals in Thailand and the Philippines) as well as GoNabit (which operates in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Lebanon, Jordan and Kuwait).

Residents Near Fukushima Are Pissing Radioactive Urine

More than 3 millisieverts of radiation has been measured in the urine of 15 Fukushima residents of the village of Iitate and the town of Kawamata, confirming internal radiation exposure, it was learned Sunday. Both are about 30 to 40 km from the Fukushima No. 1 power plant, which has been releasing radioactive material into the environment since the week of March 11, when the quake and tsunami caused core meltdowns.

Internet Marketing For eCommerce Owners

Many eCommerce site or online store owners tend to shy away from creating content in order to market their website online. After all, the accepted wisdom for converting customers as efficiently as possible is to show products clearly and attractively as possible and make it as easy as possible for customers make a purchase. That’s all good and well but this method focuses on converting traffic, not driving traffic. There’s not much use in having the world’s greatest salesperson if you keep him (her) locked in a basement. In the same way, putting all your energy into creating a slick, high converting eCommerce site (or online store) is not much use if you can’t bring potential customers to it in sufficient numbers.

Apple Will Have TWO New iPhones In September

Apple will be releasing two new iPhones this September, says Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore in a note this morning. It will release the iPhone 5, and the iPhone 4S, a “mid-range” prepaid smartphone priced at $350. The data plans would work similarly to the iPad. Users could sign up and pay for what they need when they need it.
