Disable Auto Check-in for newly visited sites?
Is there a way to turn off auto check-in for newly visited Web sites OTHER than the opt-out check? Because, seriously, I don't think the Internet wants to know what I'm planning for world domination. And other services like stumbleupon, et al. make you do some sort of affirmative action before you "like" a site.
It seems like I could visit a Web site and before I uncheck that "Auto Check-in on Site" I could override someone else's fan status of that site.
Which actually happened tonight. And no, I was just looking at that site for a "friend".

Inappropriate?Joy, you actually took the OTF from me on that site, and as a big gossip-hound, I'm not gonna judge. You read whatever your bad self wants :D
The auto-checkin is pretty core to the OneTrueFan experience. It's about seeing who reads the same content that you do and then getting recognition from sites for being a good fan. If we default auto checkins to off, history shows that you're only going to check in occasionally, because that requires new behavior. It requires for you to think "hey, I read this page and now I should tell people that."
You can turn autocheckins off at any time, and when you do, we prompt you if you'd like to delete all your history on that site. Which means in one fell swoop, you could erase yourself from that site and no one would ever know you were there... for your friend.
I hope this helps you understand where we're coming from with the autocheckins decision.I’m happy

Inappropriate? With all due respect Eric, I would like this feature, too. What I have found is that when i want to do my World Domination web surfing, I wind up disabling the extension, which makes me sad because sometimes I forget to re-enable it.
I think there needs to be a compromise. How about a way to turn on "incognito" mode for, say, 30 minutes. The toolbar changes color, and when the timer goes off, the extension shows a up a pop-up that says "Incognito mode will not be turned off. do you want another 15 minutes of Incognito?"I’m stoked, dude!

Hey, amigo! You will, I hope, be happy to know that we already have a story in the system to add "hide OneTrueFan for an hour" to the close bar popup.
So you'll be able to hide it permanently on any site, hide it for an hour on all sites, or just get it out of your way on a specific page for the moment.
Work for you? -
Inappropriate?its nice to have it in the close popup, but I think the primary way to go "incognito" should be via its own binary control in the toolbar. also, please warn me when the timer expires so I can keep incognito mode on for another spell.
I’m still stoked, dude!

If you can figure out what we should take out of the bar in order to fit another piece of on-bar control, I am alllll ears.
However, since that is a fair bit of bullshit copout, I'll also say that we will bring this request up when we finally hire a FT user interface person. We're looking hard, if you know anyone! -
Inappropriate?Eric,
I think the practice which drives me a little crazy right now is that I feel I have to audit my Web browsing if I have the toolbar on, and what if I don't opt out fast enough, because what I "share" is so far is on a public profile page.
I totally understand why, for user behavior reasons, you'd want to have the service be opt out.
I don't know if this helps, but the first place I went to look for an opt out/incognito setting was on my OTF profile page menu. (I mean, hey, even with MyBlogLog, you could be signed out of he service and free to browse...)
Also, related question which I think you'll run into once this gets more widely adopted - even if I "opt out" or "go incognito" will your servers still record what Web sites I've visited? I mean aside from the "erase my check ins" popup.I’m thinking about exploiting this for social media marketing *ahem*.

Inappropriate? We're talking this weekend about enabling players to change auto-checkins to default off in there settings. We'll post here again next week!
I look forward to seeing if these players actively check in moving forward. Prove me wrong :DI’m amused

Inappropriate?Eric,
Trust me, in real life, I fight the good fight - getting Internet visitors to convert via some "action" - along with you. So I understand - that opt out garners more activity.
I would think you would want this to be as fun, lighthearted and competitive as Foursquare. As a 4SQ user, I would want you to know that I only check in to places that are fun or that I expect friends at.
Why not have something like this in the settings for privacy:
- Automatic opt in for ALL sites/domains [this would be the default setting]
- Opt out for these specific sites/domains (and have the user specify in a text box)
- Opt in for sites via a button on the button bar. (Err, the like button scheme).I’m fighting the good fight to get visitors to convert.
